BEFORE YOU BEGIN
It is not a pencil and it is not used directly on paper. An ink stick is ink in solid form. A little water is placed on an ink stone, then the stick is rubbed against the stone until the water gradually becomes liquid ink.
This preparation makes it possible to control the concentration of the ink before the brush touches the paper.
Place a few drops of clean water on the flat grinding surface of the ink stone.
Rub the base of the ink stick slowly on the wet stone. The solid ink gradually mixes with the water.
Load the brush once the desired concentration is reached. More water gives a lighter ink; longer grinding gives a denser black.
Prepared with water on an ink stone. Its concentration can be adjusted during grinding, from a diluted grey to a dense black.
Already prepared and ready to use. It is the quickest option for working directly with a brush or nib.
TWO WAYS TO BEGIN
Discovering solid ink for the first time does not require the same equipment as working with several inks and dilutions. Here are two simple starting points.
COMPOSITION 01 · STARTING FROM ZERO
An ink stone is necessary for grinding an ink stick. The Four Treasures set already includes the stone, solid ink, four brushes, a dish and a brush rest. Add paper and you have everything needed for a first session.
