"Four Treasures of the Study" Textile Set

This set brings together the essential tools needed to discover Chinese calligraphy, sumi-e, ink wash painting, and the preparation of solid ink.

It contains four brushes, an ink stone, an ink stick, a small dish, a brush rest, and an unengraved practice seal, all stored in an embroidered textile box.

Paper is not included. Add suitable Xuan paper to observe ink diffusion, compare brush pressure, and gradually adjust the density of the black.

INFORMATION

The Four Treasures of the Study traditionally refer to the brush, ink, paper, and ink stone. Here, the set provides the preparation and drawing tools; only the paper must be chosen separately.

The ink is not ready to use. A few drops of water are placed on the stone, then the stick is rubbed slowly to produce the necessary amount of ink.

The four brushes allow you to compare several stroke widths and different ink capacities. The provided seal is unengraved: engraving and seal paste are required to use it as a signature.

SET CONTENTS
  • Brushes: 4 calligraphy brushes of different sizes
  • Ink stone: 1 round stone for preparing and diluting ink
  • Ink: 1 solid ink stick
  • Accessories: 1 small dish and 1 brush rest
  • Seal: 1 unengraved practice seal
  • Storage: embroidered textile box
  • Paper: not included
PREPARING THE INK

Place a few drops of water on the flat part of the stone. Start with very little water: a concentrated mixture is easier to dilute than ink that has become too light.

Hold the base of the stick flat against the stone, then rub slowly using regular movements without applying heavy pressure.

Perform a first test after a few minutes. If the black remains too light, continue grinding; if the ink becomes too thick, add one or two drops of water and test again.

To achieve several values, keep a portion of the concentrated ink on the stone and dilute a small amount separately in the dish.

USE & CARE

Dampen the brush before loading it, then remove excess water without twisting the fibers. Start with an intermediate size to observe changes in pressure more easily.

The brush rest allows you to set down a loaded brush without letting the fibers touch the table. The dish can hold clear water or a secondary dilution.

After use, rinse the brushes and stone with clear water. Wipe the damp part of the stick, then let all items dry completely before placing them back in the textile box.

PAIR WITH

To start with a paper that is easier to control, choose the handcrafted vegetable-fiber Xuan paper in a semi-processed finish.

To repeat characters or work on a longer composition, use the Xuan paper roll .

After rinsing, the hanging calligraphy brush rack allows you to dry several brushes without crushing their tips.

♥ IKANE WORKSHOP TIP

First, prepare a small amount of fairly concentrated ink, then draw three strokes with each of the brushes. Then, dilute a portion of the ink in the dish and repeat the test: you will immediately see what comes from the brush and what comes from the dilution.
