Set of 8 carbon pencils – soft charcoal

This set of eight carbon pencils allows you to build matte blacks, deep shadows, and progressive values without the shine that graphite can produce in heavily layered areas.

The soft lead can be used with a sharp point for outlines and details, or held at an angle against the paper to lay down dark masses and cover larger areas.

The material layers and blends easily, making it suitable for sketches, portraits, volume studies, and observational drawing.

INFORMATION

Light pressure produces a dark gray that is still adjustable. Multiple passes then allow you to gradually increase the depth of the black without immediately saturating the paper.

The grain of the surface strongly influences the result: fine paper retains more precision, while a more textured surface grips more material, making the carbon application more visible.

SPECIFICATIONS
  • Contents: 8 pencils
  • Type: carbon pencils / soft charcoal
  • Hardness: soft
  • Materials: charcoal and wood
  • Finish: matte black, deep and blendable
USE & CARE

Start by laying down large masses with light pressure or the side of the lead, then gradually reinforce shadows before returning to the point for details.

Only blend areas where you want to lose the outline. Keeping some marks intact prevents the entire drawing from having the same texture.

Sharpen the pencils according to the desired line width and protect them from impacts to prevent internal lead breakage.

PAIR WITH

To bring back bright areas on tinted paper, use white charcoal pencils .

To test carbon on different textures, use the Japanese cotton paper cards – 3 grains . The fine grain retains more detail, while the marked grain brings out the charcoal texture more strongly.

♥ IKANE STUDIO TIP

First, make a small five-value scale, from light gray to the densest black. This will give you a pressure reference before you start drawing and prevent you from darkening shadows too quickly.
