Solid ink stick – 20 g, for grinding on a stone

This solid ink stick allows you to prepare black ink by hand for calligraphy, sumi-e, wash painting, and brush drawing.

It is used with a few drops of water on an ink stone. The friction gradually releases the material, allowing you to prepare only the amount needed for your session.

The density depends on the ratio of water to the amount of ground material: a concentrated preparation yields a deeper black, while separate dilution allows you to obtain different shades of gray for wash painting.

INFORMATION

An ink stone is necessary: the stick is not used directly on paper. It is rubbed with a small amount of water until a liquid preparation is obtained.

Starting with little water makes it easier to control. You can then add a few drops or transfer some of the ink to a dish to prepare lighter shades.

SPECIFICATIONS
  • Type: solid ink for grinding
  • Weight: approximately 20 g
  • Dimensions: approximately 7.5 × 1.8 × 1 cm
  • Preparation: with water on an ink stone
  • Techniques: calligraphy, sumi-e, wash painting, and ink drawing
PREPARING THE INK

Pour a few drops of water onto the grinding area of the stone. Keep the base of the stick flat, then rub slowly without applying heavy pressure.

Regularly test the ink on a scrap piece of the same paper. If it remains too light with the same amount of water, continue grinding in short sessions.

If the preparation becomes too thick or drags on the paper, add a drop or two of water and mix before testing again.

For wash painting, first prepare a concentrated base and then dilute small amounts separately. This will keep a dense black available throughout your session.

CARE

After use, wipe the damp part of the stick and let it dry completely before storing. Do not leave the stick soaking in water.

Rinse the stone with clear water before the ink dries on its surface. Then keep the stick in a dry place, away from humidity.

PAIR WITH

To prepare several levels of dilution without altering all the ink, use the 5-well ceramic palette .

To compare several ink reservoirs and line widths, pair it with the set of 3 calligraphy brushes – mixed fibers .

To observe how the same ink reacts according to the paper's absorbency, use the handcrafted Xuan paper .

♥ IKANE WORKSHOP TIP

Keep the amount of water constant during an initial test and check the blackness every 30 to 60 seconds of grinding. You will see much more precisely how the concentration evolves than by adding water during the preparation.
