Solid ink stick – 16 cm / 120 g
This solid ink stick is used to hand-prepare liquid ink for calligraphy, sumi-e, wash painting, and brush drawing.
A few drops of water are placed on an inkstone, and the stick is then rubbed slowly across its surface. The material is gradually released, allowing you to prepare exactly the amount needed for your session.
With its 16 cm size and weight of approximately 120 g, it offers a comfortable grip while grinding and is suitable for regular use.
Concentration is adjusted during preparation. Using little water and continuing to grind gradually produces a denser ink. Further dilution can then be used to create lighter greys and washes.
The result also depends on the stone, brush, and paper used. The same preparation may remain sharp on treated surfaces and spread much more quickly on highly absorbent paper.
Place a few drops of water on the stone, then rub the stick with slow, steady movements without pressing too hard.
Test the preparation on a scrap of the same paper. If it is too light, continue grinding; if it becomes too thick, add a drop or two of water and mix.
After your session, wipe the damp side of the stick and let it air dry before storing it. Do not leave it soaking in water and keep it away from moisture.
To work on line quality and pressure variations, pair it with the traditional bamboo calligraphy brush .
To compare different levels of absorption, use the artisanal Xuan paper in untreated, semi-treated, or treated versions.

First, prepare a small amount of quite dense ink, then transfer a portion of it to a small dish with a few drops of water. This gives you two shades of black without having to dilute your entire preparation.
