The variation does not come from applying more pressure: it primarily relies on the pen's holding angle, the direction of the stroke, and the chosen nib width.
INFORMATION
A flat nib has a straight writing edge. When held at a stable angle, it naturally creates an alternation between broad and finer strokes.
Smaller widths are suitable for compact alphabets, preparatory exercises, calligraphic annotations, and details. Wider nibs allow for the construction of titles, initials, and compositions where the form of each letter remains clearly visible.
To maintain a clean line, use relatively smooth and low-absorbency paper. Paper that is too fibrous or very porous can cause ink to spread and reduce the sharpness of angles.

CHOOSING NIB WIDTH
2 and 3 mm nibs are suitable for small alphabets, regularity exercises, calligraphic annotations, and details.
4 and 5 mm nibs provide a good starting point for understanding nib orientation. They make contrasts visible without requiring a very large medium.
7, 9, and 11 mm nibs produce wider strokes, suitable for titles, initials, handwritten posters, and large-format composition exercises.
USAGE & MAINTENANCE
Choose a nib width, then maintain the same angle throughout the line. The stability of the angle creates the regularity of thick and thin strokes.
Start with straight strokes, simple curves, and series of lines before forming complete letters. This helps to understand how the nib reacts depending on the direction of the stroke.
Avoid pressing hard: excessive pressure can disrupt ink flow, catch the paper, or prematurely wear out the tip. The stroke width comes from the nib, not from force.
Close the pens after use to limit ink drying. Gently clean the nib if a deposit appears on the writing edge.
TO PAIR WITH
For sharper outlines, this set can be tested on
artisanal Xuan paper
with a treated finish, which is less absorbent than untreated versions.
