TRACED INCENSE · TROUBLESHOOTING

Why does the incense line go out or break?

A traced incense line only burns continuously when several conditions work together: a level ash bed, a continuous path, an even amount of powder and a mixture able to sustain an ember.

When the line stops or breaks, look first at where the problem appears. A line that breaks before lighting does not have the same cause as one that burns for a few centimetres and then goes out.

01 · DIAGNOSIS

Start with the moment when the line fails.

Before changing the powder or starting again, distinguish a broken line from an extinguished ember or an excessively fast burn.

01

It goes out after a few centimetres

There may be a tiny break, an area with too little powder, irregular density or a powder that does not sustain an ember by itself.

02

The design breaks when the stencil is removed

The ash may be uneven, the powder may be poorly distributed or the stencil may have moved sideways while being lifted.

03

One area burns much faster

That part of the line may be thicker, looser or more exposed to moving air.

04

The ember will not start

The powder may be damp, the ignition too brief or the mixture may not be designed for direct traced combustion.

Do not assume every incense powder works the same way

Some scented powders can sustain a traced ember directly. Others require a combustible base or are intended for indirect heating. Check the intended use of the powder before changing the ash or stencil.

02 · SIX CAUSES

Check continuity, density, ash, powder, ignition and air separately.

Changing everything at once makes the problem harder to identify. A short test line is usually enough to isolate the main cause.

01

A break in the line

Even a very small gap can stop the ember. Check corners, joins and areas disturbed when the stencil was lifted.

02

Too little powder

A very thin or incomplete section may not contain enough combustible material to carry the ember forward.

03

Uneven density

A heavily packed section and a loose section do not burn at the same rate.

04

Uneven or hard ash

Slopes alter the depth of the line. Ash compacted into a hard surface can also reduce airflow around the powder.

05

Damp or unsuitable powder

Moisture creates clumps and gaps. Some scented powders are not designed for direct traced combustion.

06

Moving air

A draught can accelerate one section, cool the ember or move loose powder.

03 · SHORT-LINE TEST

Test the material before tracing a complete pattern.

A short straight line uses little powder and makes it easier to compare density, ash and combustion.

01

Level the ash

Prepare a small flat area without deep hollows or a hard compacted crust.

02

Make a short line

Use the same width and amount of powder from one end to the other.

03

Inspect the continuity

Look from the side and repair any visible gap before lighting.

04

Light one end

Create a stable ember, then remove the flame.

If the short line burns correctly but the full motif does not, the problem is more likely to come from continuity, corners, stencil removal or uneven filling than from the powder itself.

04 · PREPARATION

Build the line before thinking about the flame.

A clean trace comes mainly from the preparation of the ash, the filling of the stencil and the way the stencil is removed.

01

Level the ash

Remove hollows and slopes while keeping the surface stable rather than rock-hard.

02

Place the stencil flat

All parts should rest against the surface so powder does not escape underneath.

03

Fill evenly

Distribute the powder through the whole pattern without creating visibly overloaded sections.

04

Lift vertically

Raise the stencil slowly without dragging it sideways across the line.

05

Inspect before lighting

Repair gaps and uneven areas before creating the ember.

Use a stable, heat-resistant surface

Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep it away from paper, textiles, curtains, dry plants, children and animals. Let the burner cool completely and ventilate the room.

05 · FAQ

FAQ

Why does the line always stop?
Check for tiny gaps, uneven density, damp clumps and whether the powder is intended for direct traced combustion.
Should the ash be packed firmly?
It should be level and stable, but not compressed into a hard sealed surface.
Why does the stencil damage the line?
It may not be resting flat or it may be moving sideways during removal. Lift it slowly and vertically.
Can any incense powder be used?
No. Some powders are intended for indirect heating or need an additional combustible base.
How should the powder be stored?
Keep it closed, dry and away from direct light and strong surrounding odours.
