This squirrel-effect synthetic fiber wash brush allows you to hold a significant amount of water and color to create washes, gradients, backgrounds, and smooth transitions in watercolor.
Its flexible brush head allows for fluid strokes without the stiffness of a classic round brush. It is primarily suited for transparent and diluted techniques: watercolor, water-based ink, light gouache, or pigments prepared as washes.
Ikane offers three complementary sizes: no. 4 for controlled washes and small formats, no. 6 for versatile use, and no. 8 for backgrounds, flat washes, and larger surfaces.
INFORMATION
The squirrel-effect brush replicates the desired flexibility of traditional wash brushes, with a brush head made of synthetic nylon fibers.
Its main function is to carry enough water and pigment to cover an area without having to reload the brush after each stroke. It is particularly useful for skies, backgrounds, blending, and wet-on-wet transitions.
It can also be used with water-based ink or heavily diluted gouache. For very fine outlines, tight details, or thick paint, a more responsive round brush is more suitable.

No. 4 — Precise Washes
For notebooks, small compositions, controlled areas, and smaller colored sections.
No. 6 — Versatile Washes
For intermediate sizes, gradients, blending, and most common watercolor work.
No. 8 — Large Washes
For backgrounds, large flat washes, large water reserves, and compositions on larger formats.
USE & CARE
Dampen the brush head before picking up color, then remove excess water on the edge of the container or palette. Gradually load the brush according to the desired intensity and fluidity.
For an even wash, prepare enough color before starting and work without letting the edge of the stroke dry between brushstrokes.
After use, rinse the fibers with clear water until all pigments are gone. Gently reshape the brush head with your fingers, without pulling on the fibers.
Do not leave the brush soaking in water: this can deform the brush head and weaken the ferrule. Dry it flat or with the head facing down before storing it.
PAIR WITH
To prepare several dilution levels, use this brush with the compartmented ceramic palette. Its separate zones allow you to maintain a dense color, an intermediate mix, and a lighter wash during the same session.
It can also be used with Super Vision watercolor pigments to work on diffusions, blending, granulations, and transparent layering.
Between strokes, place it horizontally on the ceramic brush rest to preserve the shape of the brush head and keep your work area tidier.
🤍 Ikane Studio Tip
For a smooth wash, prepare the entire amount of color needed before the first stroke. Tilt the paper slightly and keep the bottom edge of the wash wet so that each stroke joins the previous one without creating a dry demarcation.
